Caliburn

SONIC AND THE BLACK KNIGHT
Sonic and Caliburn

In battle, Sonic the Hedgehog had always relied on his speed. However, there was once when he actually wielded a sword. Called Caliburn, it was thrust into a cliff’s edge overlooking the Misty Lake. There, the sword glowed softly — before Sonic pulled it out.

Caliburn gives off a majestic vibe. It is an arming sword — a weapon popular among knights. It has straight double-edged blade that is used for hacking and slashing. However, its hilt is what set the sword apart. It is not only decorated in gold, but has a face on its rain guard — which talks.

Indeed, Caliburn is sentient. It also has a no-nonsense attitude and a strict code of honor. As such, it disapproved of Sonic's easygoingness, even though the hedgehog was able to use it effectively in battle. Consequently, the two bickered a lot at first, with Sonic describing the sword as an ‘over-sized letter opener’.

Sonic vs Lancelot

However, Caliburn and Sonic had no choice but to work together. Sonic was caught up in King Arthur's story — with a twist. According to Merlin’s granddaughter, Merlina, King Arthur was corrupted by Excalibur’s scabbard. She sought Sonic's help in acquiring the legendary swords, which were carried by the Knights of the Round Table. Sonic then had to combine their powers with Caliburn’s, so he could defeat the Black Knight — King Arthur’s evil alter ego.

Fortunately, Sonic was not without allies. In this alternate dimension, Tails worked as a swordsmith, and used his skills to sharpen Caliburn. Meanwhile, Nimue, the Lady of the Lake, provided useful knowledge to aid in Sonic’s quest.

Percival

Although Sonic was not a swordsman, he was a fast learner. After using Caliburn against lesser foes, he was able to incorporate the sword into his normal attacks. Stronger than before, he went on to defeat Lancelot, Gawain and Percival. During that time, he also improved his relationship with Caliburn. In fact, the sword anointed him 'Knight of the Wind' after he selflessly saved Percival from falling off a cliff.

Merlina, the Dark Queen

Finally, it was time to face the Black Knight. After a fierce battle, Sonic was victorious. Unfortunately, Merlina revealed that she was actually manipulating everyone — so as to refashion the world in her own twisted image. As the Dark Queen, she effortlessly broke Caliburn into two, much to Sonic’s dismay.

However, Sonic’s resolve unleashed the sword's latent powers. Together, they transformed into Excalibur-Sonic and prevailed over the Dark Queen. With peace restored, Sonic bidded farewell to Caliburn and his friends and returned to his own world.
