Vorpal Sword

THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS

“Taste my Vorpal Sword”

The Jabberwock was a fearsome creature, an abomination of a dragon. It had razor-sharp teeth, terrible claws and eyes that burnt with hellish fire. It lived in the Tulgey Wood, feasting on the flesh of humans living in nearby villages.

In one such village, a father warned his son, “Beware the Jabberwock, my son!”

out comes the Jabberwock

The young boy, brave and headstrong, was not deterred — for he carried the mighty Vorpal Sword. And so he went, looking to slay the Jabberwock, and make his father proud. Luck was on his side that day. He was taking a short break when out came the Jabberwock, looking to make mincemeat out of him.

The boy was not afraid. “One, two! One, two! And through and through! The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!”

Down came the creature’s head with little effort. His father was delighted at his son’s heroic deed, “and, hast thou slain the Jabberwock? Come to my arms, my beamish boy!”

Jabberwock
by Lewis Carroll

‘Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
“Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!”
He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought—
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.
And as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!
One, two! One, two! and through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.
“And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!”
He chortled in his joy.
‘Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
