As a safeguard, the Dragon Sword was enchanted, so that it could only be wielded by those chosen by the Dragons. They were known as the Dragon Lineage. Over time, they formed the Hayabusa Ninja Clan, and lived in a remote village away from prying eyes. Within the clan, only the strongest, most skilful, and purest of heart could master the Dragon Sword. When the sword is imbued with the Eye of the Dragon, it evolves into the True Dragon Sword, which is powerful enough to destroy the world.

| The Archfiend |
The
Archfiend sought to get rid of the Dragon Sword, since it was the only
thing capable of destroying him. Consequently, he burned down the
village and dealt a lethal injury to Ryu Hayabusa, who inherited the
Dragon Lineage. However, Ryu’s rigorous training since birth and his
indomitable spirit enabled him to return from the brink of death.
Thereafter, he swore upon the Dragon Sword to defeat the Fiends, and protect both the world and his village — which he rebuilt. As Ryu faced increasingly powerful Fiends, the Dragon Maiden presented him with the Eye of the Dragon, thus unleashing the Dragon Sword’s full power. Consequently, Ryu became Ninja Gaiden — the world’s elusive protector.
Murai was one of Ryu’s most notable enemies. He was originally part of the Hayabusa Ninja Clan. However, his thirst for power corrupted him. To that end, he manipulated Ryu into awakening the Dark Dragon Blade, hoping to use its powers to conquer the world. However, with the True Dragon Sword, Ryu was unstoppable. He was able to defeat Murai, thus thwarted his evil plans.
