Black Sword

ULTIMA 7
The Avatar meets Arcadion

The Black Sword was a sword with an attitude thanks to Arcadion, a sardonic daemon. All Arcadion wanted was to live peacefully on the Isle of Fire. Instead the mage, Erethian, trapped him in a mirror. Arcadion believed the Ether Gem to be his hope for freedom. Unfortunately, the dragon Dracothraxus had stolen it from Erethian’s possession, annoying Arcadion even more.

The Avatar met Erethian and Arcadion on the Isle of Fire while attempting the Three Tests. He had passed the first two challenges, but was unable to defeat the final challenge — Dracothraxus. Seeing his chance, Arcadion offered his help. He would provide a way to defeat the dragon, but in return the Avatar would retrieve the Ether Gem and use it to free him. The Avatar agreed. Unfortunately, not only did the gem trap
Arcadion, it also bind him to the Avatar. In the end, the daemon was just transferred to a smaller dwelling.

Black Sword

Apparently, the Avatar and Erethian wanted to torture Arcadion further — for they then used the daemon’s powers to create the Black Sword. It got its name due to its hilt, which is made of blackrock — the only material able to contain the Ether Gem. With the Black Sword, the Avatar finally slayed Dracothraxus and completed the Three Tests, granting him power beyond his imagination.

Thereafter, the Avatar kept t
he Black Sword by his side at all times so as to keep Arcadion in check. He could also order Arcadion to perform certain tasks, including: create fire, which was very useful; teleport him and his friends back to the Isle of Fire; top up his mana free of charge; and assassinate targets. However, Arcadion refused to kill weaker targets, believing it an insult to his strength.

Arcadion makes a deal with the Avatar

Although the Black Sword was invaluable in the Avatar’s travels, he was forced to free Arcadion in exchange for the daemon’s help in defeating the mad mage, Lorthondo.
