DRAGAERA
Morrolan e’Drien with Blackwand in The Lord of Castle Black
|
Morrolan first met the sword when he received the blessings of Verra, a Lord of Judgment, and was shown a vision of him acquiring Blackwand. Thereafter, he traveled to the Dragaeran Empire, where he earned the favor of its empress — Zerika the Fourth. She allowed him to claim Southmoor — the land which is his birthright. Consequently, Dzur Mountain — where Sethra Lavode lived — came under his jurisdiction.
However, Morrolan did not realize she is also the empire’s most powerful sorceress. His ignorance led him to demand tribute from her. Fortunately, Sethra recognized that he is the one destined to wield Blackwand. As such, she presented the sword to him. With it, he aided Zerika in her restoration of the Dragaeran Empire by defeating many of her enemies.
As Blackwand's name suggests, its blade and hilt are black. Although the sword can function as a physical weapon, it is best used to channel magic. Since Morrolan is adept at witchcraft and wizardry, Blackwand is able to increase his magical prowess substantially.
Blackwand has also acted on its own accord. On those occasions, Morrolan had fell unconscious and was in danger. In the direst situations, it can even store his soul temporarily. Indeed, Blackwand is invaluable since Morrolan always finds himself in all kinds of risky situations.
However, despite Blackwand’s best efforts, Morrolan was still killed twice. The Left Hand of the Jhereg (a group of sorceresses) and the Jenoine (an ancient race) claimed the honors. Fortunately, his friends were able to revive him on both occasions. Meanwhile, Morrolan's adventure continues.
