Dein Nomos

TALES OF VESPERIA
Duke Pantarei with Dein Nomos

Dein Nomos is a shortsword, with a reddish-purple blade that is hollow in the center. An aura of energy surrounds the sword. Its name loosely translates to ‘Next Order’, which is a testament to its royal background — it was once used as a ceremonial sword during the Coronation of the Emperor.

Although the Empire claimed the sword as its own, Dein Nomos was actually forged — with otherworldly materials — by the Entelexia. An all-powerful race, they controlled aer — a substance that powers magic. Dein Nomos was said to be gifted to the Empire by the Entelexia as a sign of friendship.

However, the Entelexia sought to eliminate the Empire in what was known as the Great War. The humans and their overconsumption of aer threatened to release the Adephagos, an entity that would destroy the world. Yet, among the Entelexia, some fought to protect the humans. One of them was Elucifer, who assisted Duke Pantarei — a human — the Great War.

Although the humans were victorious, their fear of the Entelexia was too great. As such, they eventually killed Elucifer. Duke, dismayed by the loss of his companion, took Dein Nomos and secluded himself from humanity.

Thereafter, two humans would shape the fate of the world.  Yuri Lowell was a thief  and a proficient swordsman. Estelle was not only a princess, but also the Child of the Full Moon. She was the only one who can control aer and use it in her spells. While she harbored no ill intentions, her existence was too dangerous for Duke to ignore. He tried to kill her, but was stopped by Yuri. Yuri’s resolve to protect the Child of the Full Moon — and the world — convinced Duke to give him Dein Nomos.

The sword is said to ‘change its color and the way it cuts’ according to its wielder. Yuri’s physical prowess was increased greatly with Dein Nomos. As such, he proceeded to confront Alexei Dinoia, the Commandant of the Imperial Knights, who sought to refashion the world in his own twisted image. Consequently, he kidnapped Estelle in an attempt to awaken the Adephagos.

Yuri wielded Dein Nomos and prevailed against Alexei. However, his failure to prevent the Adephagos from awakening disappointed Duke. As such, not only did he take back Dein Nomos; he also decided to sacrifice humanity to destroy the Adephagos. Fortunately, Yuri and his companions were able to defeat him before then. Duke acknowledged Yuri’s resolve once again. However, this time he decided to join the party — along with Dein Nomos. Together, they killed the Adephagos, thus restoring the world to its natural order.

Fun fact: Alexei actually made a Fake Dein Nomos. It was kept in Ghasfarost, and required a Basement Key, which could be obtained from the Bartender at the Sagittarius in Dahngrest. It is rumored —but not proven — to be stronger than the original sword.
