Frostmourne

WARCRAFT 3
The Lich King
The Demon Lord Kil’jaeden sought the destruction of worlds by commanding the Burning Legion. To further his plans, he corrupted the Elder Shaman Ner’zhul — and turned the orc into the Lich King. To keep the Lich King in check, the dreadlords created Frostmourne, and bounded Ner’zhul’s consciousness to the sword.

The dreadlords then tasked the Lich King with unleashing the Undead Scourge upon Azeroth. To prevent Ner’zhul from having any bright ideas, they kept Forstmourne under watch in the Northends. However, even though orcs were known to be all brawn and no brain, the Lich King was more cunning than expected. While his soul remained bounded, he was able to extend his undead influence to the whole of Azeroth. Consequently, the Lich King saw his chance — and unleashed the undead plague when the dreadlord Mal’Ganis invaded Lordaeron. Such events would drive Prince Arthas Menethil to total despair.

“I will give anything or pay any price.”

As the saying goes, a cornered animal is most dangerous. Consequently, Arthas — with nothing to lose — drove Mal’Ganis to the Northends by sheer desperation alone. Once Arthas was there, the Lich King lured him to Frostmourne’s location. From there, it was easy — Frostmourne’s power was too tempting for Arthas, despite the warnings of his companions. In the end, the prince took up the sword, and used it to destroy Mal’Ganis — thus freeing the Lich King from the dreadlords.

By then, Arthas was already corrupted beyond redemption, with the Lich King anointing him Death Knight. As Ner’zhul became more powerful, Kil’jaeden acted at once — to destroy his prized creation, despite the Lich King’s best efforts to prevent its own demise.

However, Arthas soon took over as the next Lich King. He gained much power, and unleashed another Scourge upon Azeroth so as to feed Frostmourne with souls. Fortunately, just as Azeroth was facing destruction, the bravest adventurers — led by Tirion Fordring — were able to subdue the Lich King. In the end, Tirion shattered Frostmourne with his sword, thus ending the Lich King’s reign of terror.
