THE BELGARIAD
Sword of the Rivan King, Belgarion |
Aldur — one of the seven gods who created the world — was able to contain Light and its child-like awareness in an ordinary stone. Over time, it became the Orb of Aldur, distinguishable by its blue glow. However, the god Torak desired the Orb’s unfathomable powers, and activated it to nearly destroy the world.
To avoid such catastrophe, Aldur tasked the Kingdom of Riva with the Orb’s safekeeping. The god Belar then helped King Riva Iron-Grip create a sword from the metal of a meteorite to house and channel the Orb's power when the need arises. It was known as the Sword of the Rivan King, to be wielded by Riva’s descendants. The sword is engulfed in blue flames with the Orb in its pommel. It also feels weightless, even though it is a two-handed sword.
Unfortunately, Torak soon destroyed the Kingdom of Riva with the help of the goddess Salmissra,. All hope was not lost, as Belgarath and Polgara — the disciples of Aldur — were able to save Belgarion, the last of the Riva bloodline. Thereafter, they assisted Belgarion in seeking out the Sword of the Rivan King — the only weapon able to destroy Torak.
Pawn of Prophecy, the Belgariad |
Belgarion battled many foes, and grew in strength and power. He was also talented in sorcery. As such, it wasn't surprising that he was able to fight his way to Torak. Achieving the impossible, he slayed Torak with the Sword of the Rivan King — a deed that earned him the title of 'God-Slayer'. In the aftermath, Belgarion rebuilt his kingdom, with the Sword of the Rivan King as the symbol of his rule.
