The Sword of Angelus tells a story of tragic love. Buffy Summers detested her life as a Vampire Slayer. As such, she moved to Sunnydale, hoping to start anew. Unfortunately, fate caught up with her, forcing her to accept her responsibilities. Meanwhile, Angel helped her greatly, and his kindness touched her heart. Alas, she soon discovered he was a vampire, but it was too late — for she had already fallen in love with him.

Angel was actually Angelus, a vampire who caused much destruction. However, he was cursed and turned into a human. It was done to protect mankind — for Angelus’ blood was the key to summoning Acathla, a demon powerful enough to destroy the world. As such, Angelus' soul had to be sealed, so that mankind could be kept safe.
For the curse to be undone, Angel had to experience true happiness — a feat deemed to impossible until Buffy came along. As the two joined together in love, the curse was shattered, releasing Angelus. While Angel loved Buffy dearly, Angelus was more than happy to kill her. the vampire also sought to awaken Acathla, and plunge the world into chaos.

Grief-stricken, Buffy knew she had to confront her former lover. All hope was not lost. Her friend, Willow Rosenburg, tried to seal Angelus’ soul once again using her mystic powers. However, she needed time to prepare the spell. As such, Buffy kept Angelus busy by fighting him. She was able to disarm him, thus acquiring the Sword of Angelus. While Willow's spell brought Angel back, it was too little too late — as Acathla’s summoning was almost completed.

Buffy faced with one of the toughest choices in her life. In the end, she told Angel to close his eyes; kissed him tenderly; and drove the Sword of Angelus into his heart. With Angel gone, Acathla was banished back to whence it came. Although Buffy saved the world, she blamed herself for causing Angel’s death. She decided to leave Sunnydale, hoping to put the past behind her.
